Steelers Fan For Life

Do you want to show the love of your team through interior decorating?  Here are some great tips and tricks on how to make a Steeler room in your home.  Keep reading to learn about what paint, furniture, and accessories to use to make your NFL room really stand out.

1.  Design your walls black and gold. Paint the walls of a bright room black with a gold stripe or paint a black stripe flanked in gold, resembling the letters on the white team jerseys, in an existing white painted room. Run a horizontal black stripe around the ceiling as a border and line it in gold.

2.Pick black furniture with gold accents. Attach a 52-inch black television to the wall -- after all, you want to see every nuance in the game -- and place a black shelf below for the electronics. Position a black leather sofa across from the TV with a couple of black leather club chairs with gold accents. Add a gold-veined mirrored coffee table in front of the sofa and between the club chairs for snacks held in Steeler fan bowls.

3. Bring in black and gold fabric. Go to the local craft store for Steeler material and make your own no-sew curtains or drape floor-length black curtains over the rod and tie them back with gold tassels. Buy throw pillows and a blanket sporting the Steeler logo or go for a black fabric trimmed with gold accent fringe for the pillows and blanket.

4. Hang artwork and photographs on the walls. Pick artwork where the predominant color in the painting is black or gold. Pick black frames for sepia photographs, as they have a goldish tinge to the picture, or place black and white photographs into a gold metallic frame. Frame a couple of pictures of Big Ben, the team and the cheerleaders and group them together on the wall.

5.Accessorize the room. Place a clock on the shelf with a couple of black marble sculptural pieces, such as a pyramid or a square box. Place black and gold tissue paper flowers into a black vase or metallic gold urn and set on a black bookshelf. Stand a collection of gold chargers on the shelf against the wall, with black glass plates and beer steins or wine glasses in front.

Trick or Treat Postponed in Some Neighborhoods

Trick or Treat in the South Hills has been postponed for some neighborhoods.  Here is the most updated list as of 1pm today on what neighborhoods have postponed.

Frankenstorm has gobbled up Trick-or-Treat for several South Hills communities.

The high winds, heavy rain and potential flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Sandy have forced several towns to reschedule their Trick-or-Treat times.

By 10:30 a.m. Monday, Bridgeville, Collier Township and Heidelberg had already rescheduled their Trick-or-Treat times from Halloween to Saturday night. South Park has rescheduled its Trick-or-Treat to Saturday afternoon.

Town officials in South Fayette are still pondering whether to follow that lead and also change the Trick-or-Treat times.

Meanwhile, Scott Township, Carnegie and Mt. Lebanon both announced they will continue with the regular Trick-or-Treat schedule on Halloween from 6 to 8 p.m. You can click here to view changes to

Trick-or-Treat times in Dormont and the City of Pittsburgh.

Thursday Night on a Budget

Thursday nights in downtown can include dinner, movies, and entertainment for an affordable price.  Here is a great Thursday evening plan that won't cost more than 25 dollars a person.  This plan includes a movie, dinner, and a comedy show with drinks.

Once again, we are here to show you that Downtown Pittsburgh doesn’t have to be an expensive place to play. Here’s how TWO people can enjoy an entire evening Downtown every Thursday for around $40 to $50 including parking and tips. That’s just $20-$25 per person, and this gets you A LOT!

If you’re not already Downtown, you can park your car in one of the local garages after 4 pm for only $5.00. The closest to your destinations will be the Theatre Square Garage, the one at 9th Street and Penn Avenue, or the one at 9th Street and Liberty Avenue.

The first thing to do, now that you’re in the Penn-Liberty Historic District, is to head straight to the Harris Theater. On Thursdays, you can catch a movie for just 5 bucks for KQV-AM’s  5:30 Thursday. Think of it as a special “after-work matinee”.

If you didn’t have time to grab a bite before the movie, by now you’re probably famished! Well, you’re in luck, because at the corner of 9th Street and Liberty Avenue, you’ll find Sammy’s. Sammy’s is famous for their Corned Beef Special. The sandwich is HUGE: a beyond-healthy portion of corned beef topped with the traditional Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and cole slaw on rye, served with a pickle, for $5.99.

When you’re done eating, stroll on over to the Cabaret at Theater Square for their Pittsburgh Improv Jam! For only $3.00 you can enjoy improv comics from all over the ‘Burgh, or even participate if you dare! Late night happy hour begins at 9:00 at The Backstage Bar with $2.50 craft brews and $3.50 select wines, so grab a drink before you head in to have a seat. The comedy show starts at 9:30.

The complete total for your hours-long excursion? $40 to $50 for two people, including parking, movie, food, live comedy, a couple adult beverages, and tips! Enjoy!

Better yet, don’t worry about driving or parking – take the bus! There’s more routes than we can mention that put you right in the heart of the Cultural District.  Use Port Authority’s Trip Planner to get a quick, customized route. Getting there couldn’t be easier!

Robinson Gets A Gourmet Burger Joint

Burgers with a heaven and hell theme and delicious milkshakes have now made their way to Robinson.  The brand new Burgatory opened it's second location last Wednesday at The Pointe at North Fayette.  The already successful restaurant offers organic made to order burgers anyway you want them, with delicious sides to go long with your meal.

Burgatory carries a name within Pittsburgh that will either have someone saying I love that place or What is that? More people are starting to recognize the name as they have recently taken over space within the Consol Energy Center on one of the top floors. A lot more people are now being introduced to Burgatory now that the restaurant is expanding into it’s new location in Robinson.

This Wednesday (September 26th) Burgatory is officially opening it’s doors in Robinson! Located at

The Pointe at North Fayette right in front of Wal-Mart, Burgatory is finally ready to open it’s doors.

We had a chance to visit the new location before the doors opened and try out some of their delicious creations. All we can say is, if you have not visited Burgatory yet, you need to visit the new Burgatory in Robinson!

Burgatory is a friendly little joint. Plainly put, we love burgers. Whenever possible,
we use organic, all-natural and local ingredients; it’s the right thing to do, and it just tastes better.

Way better. The best part? At Burgatory, our Custom Creation Burger makes you master of your own universe, with fresh ingredients to create an eternity of great burgers, no two alike.

And every great burger deserves a great shake. We start with cream from local Titusville Dairy and turn our own ice cream daily, then spin in a bunch of crazy good stuff and make them ridiculously thick just for fun. We think sharing a great burger and shake with friends is pretty close to heaven…. Welcome to Burgatory.

Easy Silly Putty Recipe for Kids

Playdough, silly putty, and sludge are three favorite words of many children.  However, buying these products in the store over and over again can be expensive.  Here is a simple easy recipe to make silly putty in your home.  The kids can even make it with some supervision.

For one small batch:
1/2 bottle of glue (or 1/4 cup)
a little less than 1/4 cup of water + 1/4 cup hot water
1/2 teaspoon borax
Food Coloring

Borax is so easy to find! And it’s cheap. Just look in the laundry section of the store. One box is enough to make about a million batches of Silly Sludge.

To make Silly Sludge, first start by measuring and pouring the glue into a glass bowl. It doesn’t have to be glass, but it will be easier to clean if it is.

Silly Sludge Recipe - half slime, half silly putty | Love and Laundry

Then add a little less than 1/4 cup of water and stir it until it’s mixed up pretty well. The amount of water doesn’t need to be exact at all!

Silly Sludge Recipe - half slime, half silly putty | Love and Laundry

Add in a tiny bit of food coloring. Like even one drop if you can.  If you add too much, you may get some on your hands when you play with it. Mix it up until the color is combined.

Silly Sludge Recipe - half slime, half silly putty | Love and Laundry

Set that bowl aside. Now measure out 1/4 cup of hot water and stir in 1/2 teaspoon of Borax. Mix it around until the Borax dissolves. It may not all dissolve, but mostly is okay. The hot water really helps.

Silly Sludge Recipe - half slime, half silly putty | Love and Laundry

Now comes the fun (and educational) part! Pour the Borax mixture into the glue mixture and stir.

Silly Sludge Recipe - half slime, half silly putty | Love and Laundry

Almost immediately, the Borax causes the glue to make a polymer chain (which means, it makes the glue’s molecules stick together). It’s pretty cool!

Silly Sludge Recipe - half slime, half silly putty | Love and Laundry

If all of the water doesn’t absorb into the Silly Sludge, it’s no big deal!  Move the Silly Sludge out of the bowl and play with it! The more you play with it, the better it gets. You can store it in a small zip lock bag.

2013 Pirates

The 2012 Pirates season is not over, but everyone is already looking ahead to the 2013 season.  The Pirates played a promising season this year with improvements in every aspect of the game.  This just builds the anticipation for next year's season.  The Pirates are traveling a lot next season with several games out west.  There will be challenges, but with a whole year to prepare the Pirates will be ready.  Let's go Bucs!

The Pirates released their 2013 schedule Wednesday with highlights that include an opening series at home against the Cubs, a July 4 home matchup with the Phillies and interleague opponents including the Mariners, Athletics and Tigers visiting PNC Park.

The schedule also features an interleague series in September for the first time, with the Pirates traveling to Texas to play the Rangers from Sept. 9-11.

The first nine home games of the season will be against NL Central opponents, with the Reds and Cardinals coming to PNC Park following the Pirates’ first road trip to Los Angeles and Arizona.

The beginning of May will bring the Nationals and Mariners to Pittsburgh for a five-game homestand.
It will be Seattle’s first trip to PNC Park since 2004. The Athletics will come to town in July.
At the end of May, the Pirates will host two games of a four-game home-and-home series against the Tigers. They also travel to Los Angeles to play the Angels in June.

The Pirates’ final homestand includes series against the Cubs, Padres and Reds before they close the season on the road at Chicago and Cincinnati.

Next season will be the first time that the National and American leagues will have 15 teams, thanks to the Astros’ move to the AL West. As a result, interleague play will last throughout the season, with each club playing 20 games.

“I like the fact that we’re playing our division rivals an even number of times,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.

“I got (the schedule) a few days ago and looked it over. There are some different challenges. We go west a few more times. I do like equal number of games within the division.”

Steps to a Cleaner Desk

Can you not get to the bottom of your desk through all the papers?  Then, it is time to reorganize your desk.  Here are some great tips on how to make a cleaner work environment, which will also help with your productivity.

5 Steps to a Cleaner & Tidier Desk:

1. Toss Stuff You Don't Need. This might seem like a no brainer, but reading the tips in this post about cleaning your desk in 5 minutes, I realize that this one has the biggest impact and is probably the one I do the least. By consistently tossing papers and other items that I don't need, I'll keep them from accumulating to clutter up my desk.

082212_MessyDesk2.jpg2. Place Important Tasks at Eye Level. Instead of lining up post-its filled with tasks on the surface of my desk,  place them at eye level. This will help to remove more items from the desk surface and will keep to-dos from getting ignored as the papers pile up.

3. Prioritize the Top Drawer. Put items that were on the surface of my desk in the top drawer, I would not only save quite a bit of space but it would also most likely cut down on the, ahem, borrowing of my stapler.

4. Purge the Drawers. Speaking of drawers, purging and organizing is key to having a cleaner desk. If the surface is clean but the drawers are messy, disorganized chaos, how is this better? My desk drawers are in need of some serious purging, stat!

5. Break Out the Organizing Accessories. If after following the first 4 tips I still fall short of my organizing goals, perhaps it's time to consider some desk organizing solutions?

Church Brew Works is housed in the Old St. John the Baptist church in Lawrenceville. In the early 1990s when the Pittsburgh Diocese underwent reorganization, the church was put under an act of suppression and was dormant for some years until the Church Brew Works purchased it, painstakingly restored it to its original glory and created one of the most unique and beautiful breweries and restaurants in Pittsburgh. Guests can sit in the historic church sanctuary to enjoy a meal or in the enclosed garden patio if the weather is right. Church Brew Works has many tempting dishes, but the wood-fired pizza on its pub menu is sure to be a palate pleaser. There is a wide variety of pizzas to choose from like traditional cheese or pepperoni to The Southwestern with blackened tomato cilantro sauce, chipotle peppers, corn, red onions and jack cheese. True to its Pittsburgh roots, there is even a Pittsburgh Pierogie pizza on the menu with potato puree, sauteed onions, garlic and cheddar cheese. Wood Fired Brick Oven pizzas range from $13 to $15 for a 12-inch pizza.
